Done right, it lets every machine on a line run productively even when their cycles don't line up. Done wrong — or skipped — it turns a fast line into a series of stops and jams. What an accumulation conveyor does

An accumulation conveyor holds product in a controlled queue so upstream equipment keeps running when something downstream slows or stops. Instead of a jam backing up the line, product collects in buffer zones and releases on demand. The effect is to decouple machine cycles: a brief pause at the strapper or palletizer no longer starves or stalls everything behind it.

Zero-pressure vs. minimum-pressure accumulation

The key distinction is whether accumulated loads touch. In zero-pressure accumulation (ZPA), each zone is independently controlled so loads stop with a gap between them — no product-to-product contact. In minimum-pressure accumulation, loads rest lightly against one another for higher density.

Why zero-pressure matters for corrugated

A zero-pressure design protects them by ensuring loads never push against each other while waiting, which preserves both the product and the print. For high-value or fragile runs, ZPA is usually the right call even at the cost of some buffer density. The amount of accumulation you need depends on how long and how often downstream equipment pauses. The buffer should be long enough to absorb the typical stop without backing up to the source.
